Le pow-wow est une cérémonie, voire une célébration de la fierté culturelle, pour petits et grands. C’est une occasion pour les diverses communautés de se rassembler, de célébrer, de commémorer et d’apprendre les unes des autres. Ces événements hauts en couleurs mettent en valeur la musique, la danse, les habits cérémoniels, les plats typiques et l’artisanat de nos peuples autochtones de partout au Canada. Les pow-wows sont généralement organisés par une communauté ou association des Premières Nations. Les voisins, amis et proches de toutes les nations participent à plusieurs des pow-wows d’aujourd’hui.

L’étiquette

Les pow-wows sont des rassemblements accueillants. Pour que tout le monde puisse vivre une belle expérience, renseignez-vous sur l’étiquette à adopter lors de ces événements. L’étiquette peut varier selon les provinces et régions. Vérifiez auprès du maître de cérémonie, du directeur de l’arène ou du chanteur principal si vous n’êtes pas sûr à propos des attentes et ils vous répondront avec plaisir.

Les règles générales :

• Être à l’heure;
• S’habiller et se comporter de manière respectueuse;
• N’oubliez pas que les sièges de l’arène sont réservés aux danseurs et que certaines places sont toujours réservées pour les Aînés (ce serait une bonne idée d’apporter votre propre chaise de jardin);
• Être courtois et conscient des gens autour;
• Envisager de faire un don en guise de respect et pour soutenir les coûts de ces événements généralement sans but lucratif;
• Drogues et alcool ne sont pas autorisés;
• Demander avant de prendre des photos.
