Vivant \u00e0 Terre-Neuve et \u00e9tant une femme d\u2019ascendance autochtone mixte, ma grand-m\u00e8re ne pouvait pas en parler et elle l\u2019a donc cach\u00e9. Ma m\u00e8re a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 chercher ses racines apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9c\u00e8s de ma grand-m\u00e8re, et elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 capable de remonter son arbre g\u00e9n\u00e9alogique jusqu\u2019\u00e0 mon arri\u00e8re-arri\u00e8re-grand-m\u00e8re qui \u00e9tait innue. Il semble qu\u2019elle fut enlev\u00e9e \u00e0 son peuple par des missionnaires chr\u00e9tiens et confi\u00e9e, pour \u00eatre \u00e9lev\u00e9e, \u00e0 une \u2018bonne famille chr\u00e9tienne\u2019 et ses racines autochtones furent ainsi arrach\u00e9es. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire que j\u2019aurais d\u00fb conna\u00eetre et grandir avec. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">C\u2019est suite \u00e0 une rencontre fortuite avec un chef culinaire autochtone qu\u2019il s\u2019est lanc\u00e9 sur le chemin vers l\u2019Okanagan. \u00ab Je cuisinais beaucoup sur le feu et je cueillais des ingr\u00e9dients sur l\u2019\u00eele Fogo et le chef culinaire m\u2019a alors dit \u2018Chef, vous cuisinez des plats autochtones.\u2019 Et, il avait raison. Je croyais que je revenais \u00e0 la cuisine terre-neuvienne mais c\u2019\u00e9tait plus profond que \u00e7a. \u00bb Cette rencontre a d\u00e9bouch\u00e9 sur plusieurs collaborations et projets mettant en avant la cuisine autochtone. \u00c9ventuellement, le chef McDonald a senti qu\u2019il \u00e9tait temps d\u2019aller ailleurs et de se consacrer r\u00e9ellement \u00e0 la cuisine autochtone. C\u2019est sur le territoire de la bande Osoyoos et j\u2019aurai la chance de faire la cuisine autochtone. Nous discutions des noms et l\u2019une <span class=\"s1\">des propositions \u00e9tait <\/span>The Bear, the Fish, the Root and the <span class=\"s2\">Berry<\/span>. J\u2019ai dit si vous choisissez ce nom, j\u2019embarque ! C\u2019est le nom le plus cool qui soit. Il s\u2019agit de l\u2019histoire des chefs quatre-aliments et cela se refl\u00e8te dans notre menu. Je suis ravi que les enfants dans les \u00e9coles ici apprennent tout sur les chefs quatre-aliments. Mes enfants r\u00e9coltent des baies, remettent le saumon \u00e0 l\u2019eau et cueillent la l\u00e9wisie \u00e0 racine am\u00e8re! \u00bb Selon le chef McDonald, la culture et la cuisine autochtones vont de pair. \u00ab C\u2019est une question de survie \u00bb, dit-il. \u00ab C\u2019est la raison pour laquelle les cultures autochtones ont un respect aussi profond pour la terre. Si vous ne vous en occupez pas, vous ne survivrez pas. Les gens veulent tous m\u2019apprendre des choses et me raconter des histoires.
