Nunatsiavut means “Our Beautiful Land” in Inuttitut. The Nunatsiavut Government is a self-governed Inuit region in Northern Labrador, a rich and bountiful land which encompasses the five communities of Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, and Rigolet, and their Traditional stories and Culture. The lands, waters, and sky of Nunatsiavut have sustained the Inuit of Labrador since prehistoric times. The most popular way to visit Nunatsiavut is aboard the passenger boat Kamutik W, which tours our communities on a round trip from Goose Bay; but you can also arrive by air or private boat. Once here, you can meet our people and explore our magnificent scenery, find artisan-crafted treasures and soak up our history and Culture on guided tours and return home with experiences you will never forget. There are several historic sites found within Nunatsiavut that are important to the history of what is now called Canada: the resettled community of Hebron; the Hopedale Mission Complex, and the former village of Okak, a once-thriving Inuit settlement. Interpretation and tours are provided in Hebron and the Hopedale Mission Complex. In the northern limits of Nunatsiavut lies the Torngat Mountains National Park with its breathtaking landscape that calls to you from the distant past. The only way to experience this unique landscape is by visiting the Torngat Mountains Base Camp & Research Station. At the southern limits of Nunatsiavut lies the Mealy Mountain National Park Reserve, and you’ll hear many stories of its mountains during your stay in Rigolet.
