Boasting more than 26,000 items, the Musée des Abénakis features the largest number of Indigenous artifacts and Abénaki art in Québec, on Canada’s East Coast and in New England. to a time when the Innu/Ilnu people of this region — living today on the Mashteuiatsh reserve — traversed the waters in their canoes and enjoyed a nomadic lifestyle governed by the seasons. Some 6,000 years ago, following the melting of the glaciers, the Tshishennuatsh (ancestors of the Ilnuatsh) penetrated the heart of the Canadian Shield. The first humans to set foot there, they gradually occupied the entire watershed that drains into the Saguenay and Pekuakami. Their fur coats and boots protected them from harsh winter winds. Intricately beaded jackets and dresses spoke of a creative outlook. And feathered headdresses reflected a love of ceremony. Today, near the museum — which features temporary exhibits, a Mashteuiatsh boutique souvenir store and a permanent installation called “The Spirit of Pekuakamiulnu” — one can paddle the well-traveled rivers by canoe or walk the Nuhtshimitsh interpretation trail and learn about traditional shelter, travel, food and medicine in the boreal forest.

These bison are a cultural herd and teach our guests about the special relationship of kinship and resiliency to prairie nations. Wanuskewin is home to the longest running archeological dig site in Canadian history. Arrowheads, pottery sherds, and bison bones litter the valley where our visitors of today walk the 6km of hiking trails. Bison jumps, tipi rings and the worlds most northerly Medicine Wheel all can be found within the park boundaries. In December of 2017 the park was named to the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Designation, and hopes to be officially recognized as the first site in Saskatchewan’s history in the coming years. Like it was thousands of years ago, Wanuskewin remains a gathering place, and is a beautiful example of Northern Plains culture, featuring art, dance, cuisine, and education all under one roof.
