Subsequently, in 1998, Nunavik Rotors is created and a rotary-wing service is added to the region from its base in Kuujjuaq with the purchase of an Aerospatiale Astar 350 helicopter. In 2008, the airline acquired a Boeing 737-200C capable of landing on gravel and specially adapted for northern operations much to the pride of management and customers alike. Today, after more than 37 years in operation, Air Inuit has become an important regional carrier in Canada. ancient village site in Haida Gwaii, the striking Haida Heritage Centre is a dream-come-true for the Haida people. In 2001, before construction of the centre began, six poles created by master carvers and representing six of the southernmost villages in Haida Gwaii were raised. Those six villages are Skidegate (Hlgaagilda), Ts’aahl, Cumshewa, Skedans (K’uuna), SGang Gwaay and T’aanuu. The site immediately began attracting visitors and media attention from around the world. Inspired by the structures that once hugged the shore in the ancient village, the stunning oceanside centre opened its doors to the public in 2007. Today, the centre is made up of a series of longhouses that accommodate the Haida Gwaii Museum, Performance House, Carving Shed, Canoe House, Bill Reid Teaching Centre, two multipurpose classrooms, a spacious Welcome House area, Eating House and a gift shop. Weaving, Pole, and Canoe tours offered on-site feature stories that highlight the past, present, and future of the Haida people. to a time when the Innu/Ilnu people of this region — living today on the Mashteuiatsh reserve — traversed the waters in their canoes and enjoyed a nomadic lifestyle governed by the seasons. Some 6,000 years ago, following the melting of the glaciers, the Tshishennuatsh (ancestors of the Ilnuatsh) penetrated the heart of the Canadian Shield. The first humans to set foot there, they gradually occupied the entire watershed that drains into the Saguenay and Pekuakami. Their fur coats and boots protected them from harsh winter winds. Intricately beaded jackets and dresses spoke of a creative outlook. And feathered headdresses reflected a love of ceremony. Today, near the museum — which features temporary exhibits, a Mashteuiatsh boutique souvenir store and a permanent installation called “The Spirit of Pekuakamiulnu” — one can paddle the well-traveled rivers by canoe or walk the Nuhtshimitsh interpretation trail and learn about traditional shelter, travel, food and medicine in the boreal forest.

Kekuli means “Pithouse” a warm winter dwelling built into the ground to protect people from the elements, that the Thompson First Nation lived in hundreds of years ago. In the Thompson language, they’re called sʔístkn; and you can still find historical Kekulis throughout the Thompson and Okanagan area today. That traditional warm welcome is something that co-owners Sharon Bond and Darren Hogg bring to the Kekuli Café, “Acknowledgment is so important in our culture,” says Sharon. “I wanted a place where everyone would feel welcome and acknowledged.” You feel that unique traditional cultural welcome as soon as you step inside: pow wow music softly plays, and Indigenous art hangs on the walls. And the bannock? It’s Sharon’s niche in the restaurant business, creating food from the homestyle ingredients that she grew up on, focussed around bannock, a ‘survival bread’ that was a staple food in the diets of Metis, First Nations, and Inuit communities. “I love how each culture has their own version of fried bread,” says Sharon. “There are so many similarities, like people, food will bring us together.”

Since the centre’s construction, it has served as a spectacular meeting place to celebrate and share the history, traditions and living Culture of O’Brien’s people. Now considered the Yukon’s premier conference and convention centre, KDCC currently houses the Whitehorse Public Library and a repository of Kwanlin Dün cultural artifacts, some of which are on display. It also functions as a showcase for artists, artisans, storytellers, drummers, dancers and carvers. And every summer, an Indigenous artist-in-residence works on site. Visitors can enjoy a cultural tour or drop in on their own. The centre is home to a traditional sewing circle, along with workshops such as “Moosehide to Moccasins” and moose hair tufting. the archeological finds of villages and cemeteries and answer your questions about the recent and not so recent history of the Mi’kmaq. “We are in one of New Brunswick’s oldest continuously inhabited communities,” says Patricia Dunnett, general manager of Metepenagiag Heritage Park. “It dates back almost 3,000 years. We are an ancient Mi’kmaw community.” Visitors from around the world come to stay in a teepee on the powwow grounds, sit around the fire to hear elders tell stories, or go inside to wander through interactive displays, images and videos about archeological finds. “We have a lot of people who are specifically trying to find out about First Nations,” says Dunnett. When they do, many experience a connection to the Mi’kmaq. “A lot of the visitors that I talk to about our culture like to find a similarity to their own culture,’” says Dunnett. Sometimes those connections can be quite emotional. “I’ve made people cry, in a really good way. They’re very touched in their spirit and they are overcome with emotion. They just fall in love with this place.”

hide is kind of, well, everywhere!” says an enthusiastic Amy Willier, who co-owns the Calgary-based gallery with her mom Yvonne Jobin, a Cree woman originally from High Prairie, Alberta. “We started our operation representing six Indigenous artists and now we feature over 50,” says Willier, adding that her artists include Peepeekisis First Nation sculptor Lloyd Pinay from Saskatchewan, who specializes in bronze sculptures, and Phil Gatensby, an elder with the Tlingit First Nation in the Yukon who carves mammoth ivory. “We’re very much about the appreciation of Native art, not the appropriation of Native art,” says Willier. Her gallery promotes traditional art in local schools and corporations and offers in-house workshops on everything from beading to fish-scale art. “When my mom was in her late 20s, she took a native clothing design class and loved it. It was like the grandmothers were working through her as they had waited for this moment,” says Willier. “Later, my mom was able to learn about hide-tanning, basket-making and other traditional arts from her elders before these skills were lost. I’ve learned everything I know from my mom.” Willier’s son Colton also provided inspiration for the gallery, which opened in 2009. “I didn’t want to have to work somewhere else and put him in daycare,” she explains of the young boy who is now making a name for himself as the world’s youngest Indigenous filmmaker (that’s another story). “Our customers have watched him grow since he was a baby in a Jolly Jumper.”
