Elk Island Snowshoe Discovery Tour
Your winter geo-adventure begins at the Moss Lake Trailhead, where the last glaciation deposited abundant rolling hills and meltwater depressions along with alternating boreal vegetation. This region of Elk Island National Park is perfect for beaver habitat, as well as getting the heart rate up while snowshoeing in the winter wonderland of this pristine region of central Alberta. Experience this special place where the buffalo still roam with a fresh blanket of snow is quite intimate and memorable during the slow season. Your journey ends with an indigenous sharing circle with some indigenous music, storytelling, and teachings around a cozy fire.

The hike will showcase a pristine landscape along with plant and wildlife viewing while passing through a boreal forest, terraced beaver dams, and native grassland habitat. To top it off, you will also participate in a sharing circle with some indigenous music, storytelling, and teachings.

Enjoy hiking inside Alberta’s capital city and within Edmonton’s world famous river valley. You will learn about the unique geological features exposed in the river valley and walk in the footsteps of Indigenous Peoples who continue to visit this sacred place on Turtle Island for the last 10,000 years. You will also participate in a sharing circle with some indigenous music, storytelling, and teachings on a Métis River Lot and inside the Indigenous Art Park. Your geo-adventure begins on the historic site of Fort Edmonton IV and its ancient sacred burial ground and holy cemetery near the Rossdale Power Plant. We also visit the last Fort Edmonton site on the Alberta Legislature Grounds before visiting a prominent geologic outcrop that showcases sediments above where dinosaurs once roamed, all the way to the more recent glacial lake deposits, when the last ice age retreated on the Great Plains that allowed our ancestors to return.
