Immerse yourself in the heritage and distinct Indigenous stories of the families who formed a Métis community along the historic Victoria Trail, Alberta’s first road. These Métis families ate what they grew, trapped, hunted or traded with the nearby Fort Victoria. Although work was challenging there was plenty to celebrate through music, jigs, art, and community gatherings. Travel back through time at Métis Crossing, located on over 500 acres of land on the five original river lots along the North Saskatchewan River in the Victoria District, Alberta’s first major destination for Métis Cultural interpretation, education, gatherings and business development. The recently completed Cultural Gathering Centre, designed by Métis architect Tiffany Shaw-Collinge, incorporates traditional craftsmanship with modern materials to create a stunning structure that echoes the building style of fur trade era river lot homes of the mid-1800s. The Centre offers the functionality of a contemporary place to gather, learn, and share the distinct Métis story. Discover the world of the Métis people through an overview of our traditional seasonal practices on a Meet the Métis experience: tap your toes to fiddle playing and jig demonstrations; hear stories and learn our history and the importance of music, dance, celebration and traditional arts and crafts in Métis Culture.
