Lorne Alexander Julien, known in Mi’kmaw as Sma’knis, “Warrior on the Hill”, is a Mi’kmaw artist and member of Millbrook First Nation, We’kopekitk, Nova Scotia. Lorne is a self-taught painter who brings powerful visions to light through contemporary Indigenous acrylic works that honour his people, his land and his spirit.
With bold, vibrant colours and an intentional simplicity, Lorne’s pieces reflect a deep spiritual connection. His inspiration flows from dreams and visions, and each brushstroke is a quiet act of prayer – one that brings him healing and offers it in return. Through his art, Lorne shares stories of hope, strength, and balance, infusing his work with the sacred energy of Mi’kmaw tradition.
Beyond the canvas, Lorne’s impact extends into communities across the region. His murals (found in schools and public spaces such as government buildings) are more than beautiful images. They are symbols of inclusion, respect, and healing. Each mural is a gesture toward reconciliation, creating environments where Indigenous voices are honoured and celebrated.
Lorne believes that incorporating Indigenous art into shared spaces is a meaningful way to foster understanding. His work uplifts the spirit, offering connection and reflection for all who encounter it. Art is his path, and with each creation, he seeks to inspire hope, foster healing, and keep the teachings of his ancestors alive.
