You can feel the energy when you visit the diverse exhibits at the Musée des Abénakis in Odanak, Quebec. Mathieu O’Bomsawin, who began working at the museum when he was just 16 years old, understands why. His grandfather — explains the man who now works as the museum’s general manager — founded the institution back ...
in 1965, and his spirit has never left. Community is at the heart of Quebec’s first Indigenous museum. “Our people’s involvement is fundamental to our success. The Abénaki culture is deeply ingrained in our employees, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike,” says O’Bomsawin. “The site’s authenticity inspires others to spread our story worldwide.” The Abénaki are one of 11 Algonquian-speaking Indigenous peoples living in Quebec. Traditionally, these people were semi-nomadic — fishing, hunting and gathering in order to survive. To this day, the Abénaki culture remains rich in oral history, traditional teachings, art and dancing. Boasting more than 26,000 items, the Musée des Abénakis features the largest number of Indigenous artifacts and Abénaki art in Québec, on Canada’s East Coast and in New England. Visitors are transported to the early years of Abénaki life and the people’s role in Canada’s colonial history as well as the American revolution. Renovated 12 years ago, the museum is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a venerable culture through a combination of exhibits, educational programs, collections and multimedia. Just as O’Bomsawin’s grandfather intended, Musée des Abénakis has become a means to transmit the knowledge about the Abénaki Nation to future generations.

Air Inuit
Air Inuit is a regional airline that provides vital passenger, charter, cargo and emergency air transport services throughout northern Quebec and destinations across Canada and the United States. Air Inuit began operations in 1978 with the purchase of a single-engine De Havilland Beaver aircraft, followed shortly afterward by a pair of Twin Otters, a Single ...
Otter and a DHC3 based in Kuujjuaq. In 1983, the company purchased the routes north along the eastern Hudson’s Bay coast from Austin Airways, increasing its Twin Otter fleet to 8. In 1985, the company acquired its first Hawker Siddley 748 and began operating from a base in Kuujjuaraapik which was later relocated to La Grande (LG2) to address the growing demand to move cargo and heavy machinery throughout the region, primarily for mining purposes. In 1988, Johnny May’s Air Charters was purchased as a subsidiary company running Single Otters and Beavers during the float season. In 1995, the company embarked on an ambitious expansion plan, introducing De Havilland Dash-8-100 service between Montreal and Nunavik. Subsequently, in 1998, Nunavik Rotors is created and a rotary-wing service is added to the region from its base in Kuujjuaq with the purchase of an Aerospatiale Astar 350 helicopter. In 2008, the airline acquired a Boeing 737-200C capable of landing on gravel and specially adapted for northern operations much to the pride of management and customers alike. Today, after more than 37 years in operation, Air Inuit has become an important regional carrier in Canada. The company has recently built a multi-purpose state-of-the-art maintenance center and head office near Montreal’s Trudeau International airport as part of a sweeping modernization initiative designed to meet increased demand for air transport services throughout Northern Quebec and other destinations across Canada and the United States.

International visitors are increasingly arriving from China, Taiwan, Japan, and Germany. “People are very curious about First Nations history,” says Squires. “We’ve started offering a blessing and smudging services to groups who want to incorporate that.” The resort’s two restaurants and two bars also add Aboriginal touches to their menus, such as cheeses with house-made bannock and saskatoon berry jam. There’s a Haida saying, Sing ‘waadluxan gud gina sk’aadga gii gang, which means learn something new every day. “I learn something I didn’t know about my culture every single day I work here,” says Raven Ryland in her role as Cultural Ambassador at the Haida Heritage Centre. Located at Kay Llnagaay or “Sea-Lion Town,” an ...
ancient village site in Haida Gwaii, the striking Haida Heritage Centre is a dream-come-true for the Haida people. In 2001, before construction of the centre began, six poles created by master carvers and representing six of the southernmost villages in Haida Gwaii were raised. Those six villages are Skidegate (Hlgaagilda), Ts’aahl, Cumshewa, Skedans (K’uuna), SGang Gwaay and T’aanuu. The site immediately began attracting visitors and media attention from around the world. Inspired by the structures that once hugged the shore in the ancient village, the stunning oceanside centre opened its doors to the public in 2007. Today, the centre is made up of a series of longhouses that accommodate the Haida Gwaii Museum, Performance House, Carving Shed, Canoe House, Bill Reid Teaching Centre, two multipurpose classrooms, a spacious Welcome House area, Eating House and a gift shop. Weaving, Pole, and Canoe tours offered on-site feature stories that highlight the past, present, and future of the Haida people. Visitors learn about the significance of poles, the importance of repatriating human remains to ancestral lands and the impact of the smallpox epidemic of 1862 when the Haida population dropped from 10,000 people down to 600. Future goals at the centre include expanding an exciting Artists-in-Residence program as well as creating a cultural camp for local youth that would help them connect back to their land and culture. Raven Ryland says she and other staff are guided by the centre’s mission statement which reads: “Through the Kay Llnagaay Haida Heritage Centre we celebrate the living culture of the Haida. Through language, art and stories we share our relationship with the land and sea — that which shapes, nourishes and sustains us. Kay Llnagaay protects and fosters Haida culture by reaffirming artistic expression and serving as a keeper of all that we are. Kay Llnagaay is a place for the Haida voice to be heard. This is our gift to the world.”

Built on the shore of Pekuakami (Lac Saint-Jean) in 1977, the mission of the Native Museum of Mashteuiatsh (Musée Amérindien de Mashteuiatsh, in French) is to protect, develop and promote Ilnu cultural heritage and transmit it to future generations. When visiting the museum, located less than 300 kilometres north of Quebec City, you are transported ...
to a time when the Innu/Ilnu people of this region — living today on the Mashteuiatsh reserve — traversed the waters in their canoes and enjoyed a nomadic lifestyle governed by the seasons. Some 6,000 years ago, following the melting of the glaciers, the Tshishennuatsh (ancestors of the Ilnuatsh) penetrated the heart of the Canadian Shield. The first humans to set foot there, they gradually occupied the entire watershed that drains into the Saguenay and Pekuakami. Their fur coats and boots protected them from harsh winter winds. Intricately beaded jackets and dresses spoke of a creative outlook. And feathered headdresses reflected a love of ceremony. Today, near the museum — which features temporary exhibits, a Mashteuiatsh boutique souvenir store and a permanent installation called “The Spirit of Pekuakamiulnu” — one can paddle the well-traveled rivers by canoe or walk the Nuhtshimitsh interpretation trail and learn about traditional shelter, travel, food and medicine in the boreal forest.

corn and black beans to garden fresh salads and sweet treats —try the Saskatoon berry bannock! — there’s something delicious for everyone. What’s in a name? Kekuli means “Pithouse” a warm winter dwelling built into the ground to protect people from the elements, that the Thompson First Nation lived in hundreds of years ago. In the Thompson language, they’re called sʔístkn; and you can still find historical Kekulis throughout the Thompson and Okanagan area today. That traditional warm welcome is something that co-owners Sharon Bond and Darren Hogg bring to the Kekuli Café, “Acknowledgment is so important in our culture,” says Sharon. “I wanted a place where everyone would feel welcome and acknowledged.” You feel that unique traditional cultural welcome as soon as you step inside: pow wow music softly plays, and Indigenous art hangs on the walls. And the bannock? It’s Sharon’s niche in the restaurant business, creating food from the homestyle ingredients that she grew up on, focussed around bannock, a ‘survival bread’ that was a staple food in the diets of Metis, First Nations, and Inuit communities. “I love how each culture has their own version of fried bread,” says Sharon. “There are so many similarities, like people, food will bring us together.”

their lives, drastically changed. In 2012, the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC) was built in Whitehorse. “The opening…marks a deeply meaningful event for our people as we celebrate the reclamation of our ancestral home along the riverbank,” says Rick O’Brien, a former Kwanlin Dün First Nation chief. Since the centre’s construction, it has served as a spectacular meeting place to celebrate and share the history, traditions and living Culture of O’Brien’s people. Now considered the Yukon’s premier conference and convention centre, KDCC currently houses the Whitehorse Public Library and a repository of Kwanlin Dün cultural artifacts, some of which are on display. It also functions as a showcase for artists, artisans, storytellers, drummers, dancers and carvers. And every summer, an Indigenous artist-in-residence works on site. Visitors can enjoy a cultural tour or drop in on their own. The centre is home to a traditional sewing circle, along with workshops such as “Moosehide to Moccasins” and moose hair tufting. As well, KDCC acts as the epicentre for gatherings year-round, including the Adaka Cultural Festival, Frostbite Music Festival and National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations. Critically, the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre inspires youth to explore their culture and rediscover their proud ancestral heritage, while providing an important venue for Elders who help ensure that traditional teachings are passed forward.

We are an ancient Mi’kmaw community.” Visitors from around the world come to stay in a teepee on the powwow grounds, sit around the fire to hear elders tell stories, or go inside to wander through interactive displays, images and videos about archeological finds. “We have a lot of people who are specifically trying to find out about First Nations,” says Dunnett. When they do, many experience a connection to the Mi’kmaq. “A lot of the visitors that I talk to about our culture like to find a similarity to their own culture,’” says Dunnett. Sometimes those connections can be quite emotional. “I’ve made people cry, in a really good way. They’re very touched in their spirit and they are overcome with emotion. They just fall in love with this place.”

hide is kind of, well, everywhere!” says an enthusiastic Amy Willier, who co-owns the Calgary-based gallery with her mom Yvonne Jobin, a Cree woman originally from High Prairie, Alberta. “We started our operation representing six Indigenous artists and now we feature over 50,” says Willier, adding that her artists include Peepeekisis First Nation sculptor Lloyd Pinay from Saskatchewan, who specializes in bronze sculptures, and Phil Gatensby, an elder with the Tlingit First Nation in the Yukon who carves mammoth ivory. “We’re very much about the appreciation of Native art, not the appropriation of Native art,” says Willier. Her gallery promotes traditional art in local schools and corporations and offers in-house workshops on everything from beading to fish-scale art. “When my mom was in her late 20s, she took a native clothing design class and loved it. It was like the grandmothers were working through her as they had waited for this moment,” says Willier. “Later, my mom was able to learn about hide-tanning, basket-making and other traditional arts from her elders before these skills were lost. I’ve learned everything I know from my mom.” Willier’s son Colton also provided inspiration for the gallery, which opened in 2009. “I didn’t want to have to work somewhere else and put him in daycare,” she explains of the young boy who is now making a name for himself as the world’s youngest Indigenous filmmaker (that’s another story). “Our customers have watched him grow since he was a baby in a Jolly Jumper.”

Located in the foothills 110 kilometres northwest of Calgary, just off the legendary Cowboy Trail, Painted Warriors Ranch is an ideal place to learn about animal tracking and natural navigation using a shadow stick. Certified training courses are also offered for everything from outdoor cooking and hunting, to equine first aid and horseback riding, which can include multi-day backcountry boot camp adventures. Join the chef in collecting wild plants and roots used for food and medications, and take part in preparing a traditional evening meal. Then head to bed in a tent — go simple or opt for a luxurious walled tent for a night of glamping. Wake up refreshed to the sounds of birds and nature. “Our goal is to offer more than just tourism experiences,” says Tracey Klettl, who runs the 100 per cent Indigenous-owned Painted Warriors with partner Tim Mearns. “People are losing their outdoor skills and we’re working to keep them alive since they’re part of our culture.”

With a guide by your side, explore a landscape teeming with wildlife that includes grizzlies, sea wolves and the legendary spirit bear (Kermode bear), a rare, genetic variation of the black bear. ...
Observe orcas, sea lions, white-sided dolphins, and humpback whales as, together, you glide through the misty waters off Canada’s wild West Coast. Listen to locals as they tenderly share stories about an ancient and still very much alive culture. “This region is a rare and special gem,” says Spirit Bear Lodge spokesman Doug Neasloss of the Kitasoo/ Xai’xais First Nation. “I often refer to our part of the world as Canada’s Galapagos.” The operation offers ecotourism packages that range from four to seven days in length. Guests are surrounded by wilderness, staying in stunning, waterfront accommodations that pay homage to traditional longhouses and traveling by motorboat into even more remote locations. “By visiting Spirit Bear Lodge, travelers are choosing to support local employment and community. We are very much a family environment,” Neasloss says. “When people leave, I hope they walk away understanding both our culture and the environmental stewardship that has gone into protecting one of the most special places in Canada.”
